Polo in Western Australia

Public interest in the sport of polo has been growing over the past few years in Perth. Most of the public are not aware that polo has a rich history in our city and that there are official polo tournaments which occur every year during the competitive season from January through April. In fact, the earliest record of polo games being played in Perth are from 1891 and some of the ancestors of the men and women who played in those games are still gracing the polo field here in Guildford.

The West Australia Open Polo Tournament, which is part of this rich heritage, provides an opportunity for business and individuals to experience the thrill of polo while relaxing in luxurious surroundings with great food and wine.

History of event

The West Australia Polo Open tournament has been played at King’s Meadow Polo Field for the past forty years. In 2010, the City of Swan and the Perth Polo Club Inc. collaborated to host a polo festival to increase the business and community awareness of the entertainment value that polo can provide to our community, and to provide resources for support of the only public field in WA, King’s Meadow. The festival included corporate hospitality marquees and various vendors for the general public. Corporate sponsors included Auto Classic BMW, Westrac, Perth Polo Club, Moet Hennessy, BEM, CK Risk Solutions and the City of Swan. The mayor of Swan, Charlie Zanino, threw out the ball for the main tournament of the day, the Auto Classic BMW WA Open. Other games included the Westrac Cup and the Chandon Cup.

In 2011 the tournament promises to be bigger and better than the inaugural kick off. We are excited to offer companies with an opportunity to entertain clients and staff, align their company with an exhilarating sport, and provide resources necessary to support King’s Meadow as the venue for regional and even international tournaments in the coming years.
